Benalmádena

In a heart of Costa del Sol

Benalmádena is a popular tourist town located in the southern part of Spain, about 12 km from Malaga in the province of Malaga, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, on the Costa del Sol coast.

We recommend visiting Benalmádena at any time of the year because the weather is warm here all year round.

Benalmádena, together with the neighboring towns of Torremolinos and Fuengirola, forms a large recreational area that offers endless city beaches, as well as trips to beautiful romantic villages in the mountains, monuments, and other attractions. Benalmádena is among the areas with the best beaches, but it certainly also offers a greater variety of non-beach activities and is thus an ideal place for a more active holiday. Ideal for golf lovers (there are over 70 golf courses in the area), hiking and cycling, water sports, and fishing. In just over an hour, you can reach the popular winter ski resort of Sierra Nevada.

Benalmádena is a place where you can go skiing in the morning and then, after a while, order some seafood on the beach in your swimsuit on the same day.

There are over 73,000 inhabitants living here. Benalmádena is composed of three residential areas:

  • Benalmádena Pueblo
  • Benalmádena Costa
  • Arroyo de la Miel.

The city and landmarks

Benalmádena is a fairly large town of 60,000 inhabitants offering all services from large supermarkets and shopping centers to dozens of restaurants. The strip along the sea is occupied by hotels of all possible categories, while the rest of the town is mostly quiet villa neighborhoods. Benalmádena itself does not have a historic center, but in the Arroyo de La Miel district, you will find narrow streets full of shops, bars, and restaurants. The historic part with small, typical white Andalusian houses is located about 4 km from the center of Benalmádena and can be found under the name Rancho Domingo.

To the north of the marina, you can relax on Playa de Carihuela, which measures over 3 km, is less rugged than the main beach to the south, and freely merges into the resort of Torremolinos. Along the entire coast of Benalmádena runs a beautiful promenade full of stalls, restaurants, and bars open late into the night. You can thus switch between several beaches during the day and prepare a nice walk in the shade of palm trees. The seabed drops fairly steeply from the shore, making the sea ideal for swimming and various water sports, whose offerings you will find absolutely everywhere.

A popular attraction in Benalmádena is the castle built in the 1990s, Castillo de Colomares, built as a monument to the memory of the navigator Christopher Columbus.

In Benalmádena, you can also visit the popular marine zoo Selwoo Marina with dolphin shows or the Sea Life Center aquarium. A half-day trip is represented by the cable car Teleférico de Benalmádena, which takes you on a 5,565-meter ride after overcoming a 769-meter elevation gain to the Sierra de Mijas mountains, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the coast, Benalmádena, and even the African continent in the background on clear days. Cable car tickets can always be purchased online on the cable car website.

Beaches and swimming

The beaches in Benalmádena are covered with fine light sand and are ideal for relaxing, swimming, and water activities. The main strip of beaches stretches for 4 km from the yacht marina in the center of Benalmádena towards the south. Thanks to artificially built extensions of the beach towards the sea, it is sometimes up to 70 meters wide, so everyone can find their spot even in the peak summer season.

To the north of the marina, you can relax on Playa de Carihuela, which measures over 3 km, is less rugged than the main beach to the south, and merges freely with the Torremolinos resort. Along the entire coastline of Benalmádena runs a beautiful promenade full of stalls, restaurants, and bars open until late at night. You can thus alternate several beaches during the day and take a nice walk among the palm trees in between. The seabed drops quite steeply from the shore, making the sea ideal for swimming and various water sports, whose offers you will come across absolutely everywhere.

Buddhist Stupa of Enlightenment

On the outskirts of Benalmadena near the village of Rancho Domingo, you can visit an interesting Buddhist monument – the Stupa of Enlightenment. With a height of 33 meters, it is the tallest Stupa of Enlightenment in Europe and is absolutely unique in the world. You can actually go inside, where there is a small meditation room, which is very exceptional for similar Stupas of Enlightenment. Among other things, the meditation room serves to showcase Tibetan Buddhist culture.

To the north of the port, you can relax on Playa de Carihuela, which is over 3 km long, less rugged than the main beach to the south, and freely transitions to the resort town of Torremolinos. Along the entire coast of Benalmadena, there is a beautiful pedestrian promenade full of stalls, restaurants, and bars that stay open late into the night. You can thus switch between several beaches during the day and prepare for a nice walk in the shade of palm trees between them. The seabed drops quite quickly from the shore, making the sea ideal for swimming and various water sports, which you will find offered everywhere.
